New SightPLUS technology trialled by Talk Direct

Back

Talk Directs Project iCare Ambassador Mark Skelton, was invited to try out some fantastic new technology that provides visually impaired people the ability to enhance what they can see. The software was provided by ‘Give Vision’ who have made some specialist virtual reality goggles called SightPLUS. When these goggles are used with a smartphone the user has the ability to not only enlarge the objects but it also makes it clearer.

Give Visions aim is to increase the independence at home amongst the visually impaired by the goggles having the ability to magnify and modify the image according to the personal needs of the user. The company informed Mark that the goggles would make activities such as reading and watching TV a lot easier.

Mark was given these goggles for a two weeks trial and the first thing that really surprised him was how he can see things a lot better from a lot further than without the goggles. With his current sight he has to stand in extreme close proximity to the TV to be able to see the Sky planner, however, with these goggles he was able to sit on the sofa which is about 15 feet away from the TV, and was easily able to see and navigate through his Sky channels. Another advantage which Mark was very pleased with was the ability to read labels and ingredients off food tins and packages. Without the sightPLUS goggles this activity is extremely hard for him.

Mark struggles at times to use items with small digital displays such as: the microwave and setting the heating timer but the goggles allowed him to do these taks around the house with ease.

Talk Direct would strongly recommend that people give the SightPLUS goggles a try. Even though they are in the early stages of development they can make a huge difference. Unless, you are visually impaired it is quite hard to explain how frustrating it is not being able to operate items around the house. However, these goggles gave Mark his independence back and he cannot wait to see how much the equipment will improve in the next 12 months and would definitely love to help ‘Give Vision’ in the future with more trials.
