Student Oli wins logo design competitionA Kirklees College graduate let his ideas do the talking by designing the new logo for a Dewsbury communications company.

Talk Direct - a franchise of mobile phone giant O2 - gave BA (Hons) Graphic Design students at Batley School of Art the challenge to come up with a new identity for their company.

Final year students presented a range of designs to Talk Direct staff, who were very impressed by the standard of work. And the logo designed by Oli Smith was chosen as the winner.

Oli has started a design company Aye! Creative with course colleague Andy Finnerty, since the pair completed their studies.

Managing director and founder of Talk Direct Zak Patel presented Oli with a tablet as his prize for coming up with the design.

“I was absolutely amazed at the amount of thought and effort which was shown by all the students in their individual work for our logo,” said Zak.

“The winning logo stood out to me from the very first time I saw it. The simplicity of the logo and the connection between the A and L was really appealing to the eye.

“I would like to thank Kirklees College for the partnership and congratulate Oli for designing the winning logo.”

Graphic Design course award leader Ged Flynn said: “The students gained much valuable first-hand experience of working as a team for such a prestigious client.

“Through effective collaboration and the harnessing of individual abilities they have pulled it off and I am very proud of them.”

Talk Direct is working in partnership with the business department at Kirklees College’s Dewsbury Centre, offering students work experience across all areas of their company from September.

Nikki Davis, head of business at Kirklees College, added: “This is a really exciting new opportunity for students to gain real business experience, learning from the very best in mobile technology and sales.”
